Managing Your Student Summer Storage @ Up Boxed

Up Boxed offers student summer storage solutions for students at Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3), SUNY Cortland, Ithaca College & Cornell University.

Student Summer Storage opens for registration in mid January. Past users are invited first, and then space requests open to the general public. We HIGHLY recommend booking early, as we have sold out for this service every year!

We offer Pickup and Delivery of Storage, as well as have a drop off option for your belongings.

How it works:

-After requesting a space and paying the invoice, your space number is assigned.

-Write your space number on the outside of each of your stored belongings. We recommend using painters tape or masking tape to prevent damage to items.

-Schedule an appointment for pickup of drop off.

-An associate will log in the number of items being stored and take photographs of the outside of each item (box/stand/bag/etc., we don't record the items stored inside).

At the end of summer:

-Schedule an appointment for pick up or drop off.

-Your items will be awaiting you at the scheduled date/time/location

-An associate makes sure that the number of items being stored & photographs matches what you dropped off.

All storage is indoors and climate controlled. For security and insurance reasons, you cannot access your storage between the drop off/pick up dates. We can retrieve items for you in emergency cases, a $25.00 Service Fee applies to cover staff time.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL STORAGE

WE CARE! And for that reason, we want you to have all the information you need for successful storage. Here are some do's and do nots to make your experience the best and to ensure a successful storage season:

DO- Wrap delicate or fragile items up!

Bubble wrap, paper, or other forms of protection should be used to protect items. Items are being moved, and reimbursements are not given for unprotected or improperly protected items. A TV just thrown in the bottom of a box with a bowling ball on it? We've seen it. WRAP, WRAP, WRAP!

DO- Use painters, masking or non-stick tape for labeling items!

Nothing is worse than tape goo that wont come off of your favorite stand!

DO- Remember to remove perishables from your storage, and food from your fridge/freezer.

It sounds funny- but a lot of people forget about this! Food still expires in storage, and we keep your fridge/freezer unplugged during the summer. Remove all food items and perishables!

DO- Wrap Up or Box Up your mattress topper!

Due to health and safety reasons, we cannot accept mattress toppers that are not wrapped or boxed.

DO- Store clean and dry items!

Anything put away wet will get moldy. Its climate controlled, but its not magic! Smelly or unkept items will also make your other items smell as well. Gross!

DO- Remember that we have everything you need for your storage!

Our store carries Boxes of all sizes, Sealing Tape, Markers, Moving Bags, Stretch wrap, Bubble Wrap, all that you need! Tell the clerk at the register you are a summer storage participant and receive 25% OFF of your box purchases.

Now for some recommended don'ts

DON'T- Share your unit.

Its not allowed by our rules, and it doesn't work. Friends now doesn't mean friends forever and you don't want to be in charge of managing your friend's stuff and being liable for it if something happens. There is only one person allowed to be the drop off and pick up person, and that person needs IDs to do so. Someone shows up demanding items from your unit? It becomes your problem. Someone adds too much to the unit and there is an overage surcharge, it would be on you. Trust us, not worth it! We have never had one unit have too much in it for a single person, but we have when they were trying to share!

DON'T- Use Duct Tape (AKA Duck Tape) for labeling things

It doesn't come off easily, damages items and leaves a gooey mess even when you can get it off. Skip the duct tape and go for the Blue Painters Tape or similar. On Boxes you can just write the storage number with marker.

DON"T- Attempt to store a huge assortment of loose items

Don't be that person! This program is a storage space, so you will need to be able to fit the items into the space. Pack up your stuff! Items that we have to pack up for you are subject to our box charges and labor fees, billable to your account. Labor rate is $60/hour, billed per minute. Want us to pack? Hey we will do that too- but we would want to do it the right way. Reach out and it can be arranged!

We hope these tips help to clarify some of the things that come up and help you have a great experience with our service. Our service comes highly recommended for a reason! We will do it right- but we do need YOUR HELP in ensuring that things go smoothly!
